The UCTL
Pub of the Year Award 2006/2007

Click on the image to see it larger! The above prestigious award has been presented to The Bush Inn, Upper Cwmbran, after much discussion and heated debate. Theresa and Bob Lewis were presented with a framed certificate during a short ceremony at the premises on the 1st of April.

Four finalists were chosen from the hundreds of nominations received. The finalists were:-

  • The Bromley Arms, Fiskerton
  • The Compton Arms, Islington
  • The Glass House Inn, Longhope, Gloucester
  • The Bush Inn, Upper Cwmbran

But is was The Bush Inn that was in the end the unanimous choice of the judges. The fact that the UCTL meet occasionally at that pub is a shear coincidence and the judges decision was not biased in any way. Another coincidence is that the Landlord and Landlady were leaving the pub on the night of the presentation and to top that, another coincidence was that they were leaving on the same night as a no smoking ban came into effect in Wales!

We wish Bob and Theresa, Jack, Sam and Little Tom every best wish and happiness for the future and hope that the new landlord and his wife keep up the good work. (Unlikely; so far in their first week there have been three solid nights of loud disco 'music' and at least two fights!)

The certificate was presented and signed by our Chairman, Chris Harris and counter-signed by Mr Robert Fleming, our only living Life Member. If you have such a sad life that you are interested in reading the Chairman's Speech click here.

This was the notice that requested nominations.

[We invite nominations for the above prestigious award, closing date the 28th of February 2007. Please send your nominations, by email, with your reasons, and any material to support your nomination to our Chairman, Chris, at our usual email address.]

The Chairmans Speech

"Sorry to bore you with Upper Cwmbran Temperance League business, but this pub has been our meeting place since the organisation was set up, ie since 1903, ( it was supposed to be 1830, but Mark of course was late.
I am here to present the Upper Cwmbran Temperance League Annual Pub of the Year Award. As everyone will know this has been generally accepted throughout the licensed trade as being the top accolade that a pub can possibly strive for. It doesn’t mean that the winner has a Michellen 5 star rating, or indeed that they sell tyres at all. It does not mean that they sell a vast range of beers or malt wiskeys, or that they have the best décor and fittings. The winner may or may not have all of these things but the main requirements are the quality of the welcome offered, quality of the company, the beer and maybe that little something extra, that little “Je ne sais quoi”, as we say in Wales.
So from the hundreds of nominations from our members and non members throughout the world the three finalists are (in no particular order)……
• The Bromley Arms Fiskerton (Nottinghamshire)
• The Compton Arms, Islington and last but not least..
• The Glass House Inn, Longhope Gloucestershire
• Sorry, there were 4 finalists, the last one being The Bush, Upper Cwmbran.
Choosing the winner has been an onerous task, involving many hours of deliberation. I would like to thank all the members of the selection committee for their dedication.
Before I announce the winner, the choice of which was unanimous, I will give you a couple of comments for the nominees..
“They serve a fine sweet martini but what I really like is seeing the nice pair behind the bar” Robert
“ The only pub in the district to consistently serve a good pint of real ale. It’s just like being at home” (Martin)
“Less fights than Kingfisher, but not as snobby as The Queen!”
“The pub provides everything needed in a good local pub, including Late Notes!”
So with no more ado I will announce the winner.
The Winner of the Upper Cwmbran Temperance League International pub of the Year Award for 2006 2007 is

THE BUSH INN, UPPER CWMBRAN"
